Thinking about October got me
thinking about Reformation Sunday, (October 26 this year) the
remembrance of the day October 31, 1517. Martin Luther nailed arguments
he had with the then current church hierarchy about their faith
practices on their version of a bulletin board. A favorite hymn of
Reformation Sunday is “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God”, although that hymn
does get used at other times of the year. Though there are people in
today’s society who say they |
 |
find it hard to believe in God, there
are also many for whom that Reformation
hymn is so comforting. That God can be a fortress around
us and protecting
us when we can’t even see any outward vestiges of such
protection may
for others be difficult to understand. But that hymn has
helped many over the
years in their walk through life.
If this column would be displayed as a flow chart, here is
the next stop on the
path: My ruminations about the power of the Reformation
hymn evolved into a
curiosity regarding what hymns we find important. I
invite you to let me know what your favorites are. On
the next page is a survey to fill out and return. If you
are reading this online, feel free to email me your
thoughts, royer@newgoshucc.org, or download and return the
form filled out (click
here for form to print out). I’ll report back in a
future Steeple results I collect. Blessings to you in
your faith, praying, singing, worship, and work.
